1. See Coin Cart Schedule

The first thing you should do is check the Coin Cart schedule on the official website HKMA (Hong Kong Monetary Authority. Service starts from 10.00 a.m. to 19.00 p.m. Try to find a schedule for the location of the district closest to your house. Coin Cart operates around 6-7 days in each district, with one day off.

2. Use Safe Pockets

Because Hong Kong coins are quite heavy, look for a strong pouch so you can safely carry them. If necessary, use a trolley or suitcase if there are a lot of coins you want to exchange. Do not let the bag you wear get torn and coins spilled on the road.

3. Find the Right Transportation Route

Choose the right type of transportation, according to the number of coins you carry. If the number is small, you can of course be more free to choose any type of transportation. However, if the number of coins you carry reaches one suitcase, then you have to choose the most possible transportation.

Learn the Coin Cart location on Google Map first, so you don't waste too long looking for addresses. Usually Coin Cart cars park on the side of the road or enter the courtyard of the building complex. Remember the characteristics of the car to make it easier for you to find it.

4. Put the Coins in the Container Provided

After you find the Coin Cart car, there will be officers outside the car who will give you a box / container to accommodate the coins you carry. Then please pour the coins into the box provided. The officers will serve friendly and very helpful.

5. Observe Coin Counting

The coins that have been poured into the box are then brought into the Coin Cart car to be counted using the machine. Please get into the car to observe the calculations.

All types of coins both cents and dollars will be counted together / mixed. So, you don't need to separate coins according to their nominal value. Non-conforming coins will be automatically rejected. Coins that reject, among others, are because they are in bad condition, dirty, or these coins are foreign coins, not Hong Kong coins. Reject coins will be returned to you. You can use these coins to ride the Tram or MTR.

If you do not agree with the calculation results, all coins will be refunded. However, if you agree, the clerk will give you a receipt to be exchanged at the counter.

6. Exchange the receipt at the counter

After the calculation process is complete, the clerk will provide you with a receipt for calculating your coins. Then, you will be asked to exchange the receipt at the exchange counter. You can choose to exchange it for cash or put it in Octopus and E-Wallets such as AlipayHK, Octopus O! EPay, Tap & Go, TNG Wallet and WeChat Pay.

You can also choose both, partly cash and partly to top up Octopus / E-Wallet. Suppose the calculation result is not even, for example 1,824.60 then you can ask for 1,500 in cash and 324.60 for top up to the Octopus card. Even if you want to ask for cash everything is fine, it's all up to you according to your wants and needs.
