Tens of Thousands of People Displaced, Thousands of Houses Damaged by the Bawean Earthquake and Demak-Kudus Floods

Floods and earthquakes hit many areas in Indonesia. The disaster occurred on the islands of Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, and the eastern region of Indonesia.

One of the disasters that is in the spotlight is the Bawean earthquake. Data from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) as of March 25 at 06.00 WIB recorded that 4.679 houses were damaged, 33.533 people were displaced, and eight people were injured due to the earthquake in Bawean, East Java. This was conveyed by the Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari.

"So from these 33 thousand (refugees) what we need to explain is that the 33 thousand people who were displaced actually do not represent the number of damaged buildings," said Muhari in an online press conference, Monday (25/3/2024).

Muhari explained that many people were displaced not because their homes could no longer be occupied. However, many people were displaced due to the trauma of the aftershocks. He explained that the 6,5 magnitude earthquake in Bawedan affected 21 sub-districts and 7 cities.

A number of areas were affected by vibrations from an earthquake measuring 6,5 magnitude which occurred in the Java Sea around 114 kilometers northeast of Tuban, East Java, Friday (22/3/2024). Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, detailed the area affected by the shaking, namely Bawean Island with an intensity on the MMI V-VI scale. Nearly all residents felt the vibrations, items were thrown around and minor damage occurred.

Then Blora, Madura, Gresik, Surabaya and Banjar Regency with the MMI III-IV scale. This vibration was felt by many people in the house during the day.

Then Mojokerto, Banjar Baru, Sampit, Banjarmasin, Martapura, Balikpapan, Tanah Grogot, Malang, Lumajang, Madiun, Nganjuk, Pasuruan, Jepara, Rembang, Demak, Kudus, Semarang with an intensity scale of II-III MMI. The vibrations were felt real in the house and felt as if a truck was passing by.

Next are Yogyakarta, Kulon Progo, Kebumen, Temanggung, Blitar and Solo on the MMI II scale. Vibrations were felt by several people, light objects hanging swaying.

Apart from that, a disaster that had a tremendous impact on society was the Demak and Kudus floods. Data from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) as of March 24 at 19.00 WIB recorded that 19.559 people had been displaced by the flood disaster in Demak and Kudus Regencies in Central Java.
In detail, 13.027 people are in Demak and 6.532 people are in Kudus. They are spread across 119 evacuation points. Apart from that, eight people in Kudus died as a result of this disaster.

Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, revealed that 13 sub-districts in Demak and 5 sub-districts in Kudus were affected by the flood. BNPB also noted that this disaster affected 230 places of worship, three markets, 143 educational facilities, 11.173 hectares of rice fields, 15 office facilities, 15 health facilities and 529 hectares of ponds.
