Islamic Activists Dominate Egypt's New Parliament

Islamic activists from the Muslim Brotherhood and Egyptian salafi groups dominated the new Egyptian parliament after the fall of the regime of Husni Mubarak. In the first democratic elections which had just ended, Islamic parties won two-thirds of the contested seats.

"The train of democracy has entered the station and elected the first People's Assembly since the January 25 revolution," said the head of the election committee, Abdel-Moez Ibrahim, at a press conference on Saturday (21/1).

The final results show that the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) formed by the Muslim Brotherhood won 235 seats or 47,18 percent. The Al-Nour was second with 121 seats or 24,29 percent.

The liberal parties Wafd and the Egyptian Bloc are third and fourth with nine and seven percent.

The youth-dominated “Revolution Continues” coalition at the forefront of the protests that overthrew President Hosni Mubarak, won less than one million votes and won only seven of the 498 seats in the lower house. (Mel / Onislam.net / ddhongkong.org). *
