Getting to Know Hong Kong's Modes of Public Transport: Best in the World (1)

DDHK.ORG - Hong Kong known as one of the countries with the best public transportation system in the world. Most areas in Hong Kong have been reached by the MTR or Mass Transit Railway, as the train mode of transportation in Hong Kong is called. The Hong Kong MTR train line even connects the city from the airport to the most remote areas directly adjacent to mainland China.

For areas that are not covered by the MTR, from the seaside to the mountains, it can still be reached by bus, minibus, tram or taxi. In fact, the islands are also well connected via ferry services.

Thanks to the connected transportation system, people can travel easily and comfortably in Hong Kong. Not only connected, public transportation modes in Hong Kong are relatively comfortable with a definite arrival schedule.

“There are many ways to get around Hong Kong, whether by taxi, ferry, train, bus or tram. The city claims to have the safest and most efficient public transportation system in the world, as well as a variety of safe and convenient payment methods in the form of cash, Octopus Card and e-wallet," the Hong Kong Tourism Board's official language website said.

Traveling to and from Hong Kong International Airport for example, we can travel easily, comfortably, and at a relatively low cost. There are several modes of public transportation as an option.

First, Airport Express. This high-speed MTR train only takes about 24 minutes from the airport to reach the last station, Hong Kong Station.

The Airport Express train has 5 stops, with different fares for adults and children. From the airport station to the Hong Kong station, using an Octopus card the fare is HK$110. To Kowloon station, the fare is HK$100. To Tsing Yi station, the fare is HK$65. As for the AsiaWorld-Expo Station, the fare is HK$5.5.

These rates apply to adults. While children are only required to pay half.

Second, taxi. This mode of transportation is widely available from the taxi pick-up area in front of the airport's Arrivals Hall. Hong Kong has 3 different colors of taxis operating for a predefined area.

If you go to Hong Kong Island or Kowloon, you have to take a red taxi. If you want to go to the New Territories, we have to take a green taxi. While the blue taxi goes to the Lantau Island area. All taxis in Hong Kong apply an absolute metered payment, there is no such thing as a “wholesale” fare. The toll fee is included in the meter displayed and we can ask for the payment receipt.

Third, buses. There are more than 20 bus routes with code 'A', which are special buses that operate to and from Hong Kong airport. This bus is quite comfortable to take us to various locations in 3 main areas in Hong Kong, namely Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories (including Lantau Island). There are fewer stops than regular public buses.

To get to the airport bus terminal, after exiting the Arrivals Hall, we just have to walk to the right.

Fourth, chartered buses and limousines. Passengers who require limousines, minivans, vans and private group tour buses can book their transfers from service providers located in the Arrivals Hall.

In Hong Kong, there is also an airport shuttle service that is sold by individuals. For one pick up or drop off to the airport, in 2019 the fare was HK$800. Apart from that, they also provide a car rental service plus a driver at a rate of around HK$300 per hour.

The car used is a luxury car category in Indonesia, such as the Toyota Alphard. For the Indonesian community in Hong Kong, this service is usually used to pick up VIP guests from and to the airport, or to get around Hong Kong all day. [Continued] [DDHKNews]
