The Law of Praying in the Toilet

DDHK.ORG - The valid requirements for prayer are the holy place, clothes and body. As for the case of praying in the toilet, it usually happens to migrant workers in Hong Kong or some Muslim students in Japan. These two events have different causes.

First, praying on the toilet for migrant workers in Hong Kong is mostly due to the prohibition of non-Muslim employers from praying in their apartments or houses. Usually, each house has CCTV so that it can monitor the activities of the working migrant worker. If he prays in a room that is visible on the CCTV, then he is threatened with being fired from his job.

In responding to this case, three things can be done. First, report the employer's behavior to the agency that sent him to work in the apartment. This is because every migrant worker has the right to practice their respective religions. If his workplace does not allow him to practice his religion, it can be reported as a legal case, namely a violation of religious freedom. Second, looking for a new place of work, or returning to their home country. Third, if the 3 options above are not possible, then praying in the toilet is allowed if it is clean and holy.

The understanding of toilets in Indonesia is certainly different from that in developed countries. Toilets in developed countries are clean and dry. But looking clean is not necessarily holy. So a migrant worker must confirm the place where he prays the holy or not. This is based on the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad SAW: "Prayers are not accepted if they are not holy." (HR. Muslim)

As for the second case, please note that prayers do not have to be in a mosque or mushalla. Prayers can be performed in the library, classroom, field, even on the sidewalk. As previously mentioned, the validity of prayer is purity. So in its application, when praying in a place other than a mosque or mushalla, it must be ensured that the place is clean from dirt. Cleanliness is a common sight in developed countries. Therefore, in this case, praying on the toilet was not allowed. This is based on the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad SAW: "Allah made the earth a mosque for me."

Allah knows best.
