Protested by FPI, Gay Film Festival Continues

The Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) protested the holding of a gay film festival in Indonesia which had been going on since last Friday. FPI urged the German Goethe Institute and the French Cultural Center in Jakarta to immediately stop the screening of gay films organized by the gay community.

"FPI urges that the festival which promotes homosexuality and lesbianism in Indonesia be stopped," FPI said in a statement as quoted by the German news agency, German press agency. This festival, said FPI, is supported by liberal NGOs and sponsored by foreign funds.

The “Q Film Festival” broadcasts lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual (LGBT) themed films. The FPI crowd visited the location of the German cultural center of the Goethe-Institut and several places where the festival was held.

Despite the controversy, Indonesian filmmakers gave their full support for the Q Film Festival, which has been established since 2002.

This support, as quoted Viva news, they wrote through the official Q Film Festival twitter account. Among the filmmakers are several names such as Lukman Sardi and Nia Dinata.

Lukmansardi: "As long as they still have the intellect and their hearts will not commit violence, but if it is seen from the reality what is it owned by them?"

techniadinata: "Sending positive energy to my friends at @QFilmFestival. I hope the threats that come, don't come true."

The organizers of the Q Film Festival also wrote in their sentences, they explained that the situation was calm and safe again. "Things are back to normal at Goethe Haus. Okay, today's screening film at Goethe will still run as scheduled !! And other events are still held here, " he wrote in the Twitter account. (Mel / ddhongkong.org). *
