Is it permissible to pray not on time?

DDHK. ORG – The Maghrib prayer in the Tuenmun area is currently at 17.41. But until 18.00 it was still bright. Because there is a problem, is it permissible to pray at 17.50? Listen consultation this time.

Assalamu'alaykum warohmatullohi wabarokaatuh

chaplain, I want to ask about the time of maghrib prayer. I live in Tuenmun area 29th floor apartment facing south. Maghrib prayer time for the Tuenmun area is currently 17.41. However, until 18.00 it was still light from my employer's house, while looking down it was already dark.

Can I pray at 17.50 because at 18.00 it's time to cook and prepare dinner.

Jazakumullohu khoir Ustadz for the answer,
barokallohu fiik.

Thank you in advance.

Greetings, Fulanah

ANSWER:

Peace be upon you and God's mercy and blessings be upon you

Prayer is worship whose time has been determined by Allah Subhanahu wata'ala both in Al-Quran as well as hadith.

Allah Subhanahu wata'ala says:

إِنَّ الصَّلاَةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَاباً مَّوْقُوتاً {النساء: ١٠٣}

"Verily, prayer is an obligatory time for those who believe." {QS. An Nisa': 103}

In another verse, it is more clear,

أَقِمِ الصَّلاَةَ ل above

“Establish the prayer from after the sun has set until the darkness of the night and (also establish the prayer) at dawn. Indeed, the morning prayer is witnessed (by angels)." {QS. Al Isra': 78}

For maghrib prayer, Ulama agree that the beginning of the time is when the sun really sets perfectly. As for the end of the Maghrib prayer, the Ulama differ:

1. The Maghrib prayer only has one time, namely the time needed by the person who is going to pray, starting from purifying himself, covering his genitals, making the call to prayer, iqomah and performing the prayer.

This opinion was chosen by the Malikiyah Ulama, Al-Auza'i and Imam Shafi'i. The argument is the hadith narrated by Jabir radliyãllahu 'anhu when Jibril 'aliahissalam taught the prayer to the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam,

ثُمَّ جَاءَهُ لِلْمَغْرِبِ حِينَ غَابَتْ الشَّمْسُ وَقْتًا وَاحِدky

“Then Jibril came to the Prophet shallallãhu 'alaihi wasallam when the sun had set (the same time when Gabriel taught the prayer to the Prophet the previous day) then he said, “O Muhammad, stand up and perform the maghrib prayer………..” (HR Nasa'i)

2. When the loss of the red mega. This opinion was chosen by Sufyan Ats-Tsauri, Imam Ahmad, Ishaq, Abu Tsaur, Ulama Hanafiyah, and some Shafi'iyah Ulama including Imam An-Nawawi rohimahullãh. The argument is the hadith of 'Abdullah bin 'Amr radliyãllahu 'anhuma,

….وَقْتُ صَلاَةِ الْمَغْرِبِ مَا لَمْ يَغِبِ الشَّفَقُ…….

"The time for the maghrib prayer is as long as the red light does not disappear when the sun sets." (Muslim HR)

This second opinion is the strongest.

Early Determination of Maghrib Prayer Times

Then how to determine the start of the Maghrib prayer time for people who live in high places such as apartment buildings, etc.? Because at a certain height the sun looks like it hasn't set completely.

However, if you look down it is dark, which means the sun has completely set.

According to astronomy, the position of the setting sun is when the upper part of the sun disk coincides with the Mar'i horizon (the horizon that can be seen by the senses).

Meanwhile, the true horizon is when you see a white line above it which indicates that the visible position of the sun is actually far below it. This is due to the refraction of light (refraction), where the position of the sun at sunset is strongly influenced by the radius (semidiameter) of the sun, light refraction (refraction), and the lowness of the horizon which is judged to be different according to the presence of those who want to perform the Maghrib prayer. and also break the fast.

That's because there is a difference in the height of the location in the skyscraper. This can be proven at the Burj Khalifa, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where the height of the top floor reaches 650 meters DPL (Above Sea Level).

While the ground floor is around 7 meters DPL. As an illustration so that you can imagine how the shape of the building and its geographical position, including the method of reckoning.

Based on the initial calculation of the maghrib prayer time between the floors in the Burj Khalifa building, there will be a difference in sunset on the lower and upper floors of 3 minutes.

Likewise at sunrise (sunrise), on the upper floors you will witness the sunrise, the time is three minutes faster. Likewise, sunset will occur three minutes later.

If you make an analogy with the Burj Khalifa as the tallest building in the world, which is only three minutes apart for the start of the Maghrib prayer time between the top & bottom floors, also because it is influenced by the factor of refraction (light refraction), then what did your mother experience while living in the Tuen Mun apartment? Hong Kong floor 29, where the time for the Maghrib prayer there is at 17.41. for employers, please pray maghrib after 18.00.

Please pray maghrib by increasing the difference in minutes, such as by adding about ten minutes, namely at 17.51.

If you take the initiative to pray maghrib at 17.50, then it is correct. Why not just add three minutes like in Burj Khalifa, Dubai? It could be due to geographical differences, latitude and earth longitude between Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates.

May Allah ease the affairs of mother & all of us in carrying out His commandments including prayer, amen.

Wallahu a'lam.

Hope it works!

Peace, mercy and blessings of God
