Insulting Islam, Egyptian Businessman Indicted

One of Egypt's richest businessmen, Naguib Sawiris, will face charges of insulting Islam. Sawiris - who is a Coptic Christian - has been accused of insulting Islam for sending messages last year caricatures of Mickey and Minnie Mouse wearing Islamic attire on Twitter.

The trial is scheduled to be held on Saturday, January 14, although it is not yet certain whether Sawiris will attend the first trial.

Sawiris was a supporter of the liberal Egyptian Liberation Party funds and was a critic of Islamic parties.

He, among other things, accused the Islamic movement in Egypt of hijacking the Egyptian revolution, which succeeded in overthrowing President Husni Mubarak.

Sawiris actually apologized publicly for the caricature incident, but a number of lawyers filed a formal lawsuit.

In addition, there have also been calls for a boycott of his mobile phone company, MobilNil.

His party, Liberation Egypt, has only managed to win less than 15% of the votes in the three rounds of elections so far while the party which is supported by Ihkwanul Muslimin, the Justice and Freedom Party, has won 41% of the vote.

The caricature in question shows Mickey Mouse with a bushy beard and wearing a typical Muslim male head covering, while Minnie Mouse is wearing the niqab, a garment that covers a woman's entire body except for the eyes. (Mel / bbc.co.uk). *
