Does Cleaning Ears With Cotton Buds Break Fasting?

Does Cleaning Ears With Cotton Buds Break Fasting?

Assalamualaikum. Ustadz, I want to ask a question.

Can when we fast clean our ears using cotton buds can break the fast? Because, after performing ablution sometimes water gets in my ears and I feel very disturbed.

Thank you, Ustadz.

Greetings, Fulanah

ANSWER:

Wassalamu'alaikum warahmatullahi wabarokaatuh.

Basically the things that break the fast are what are sharih (clearly) contained in the Qur'an and al-Hadith, namely eating, drinking, menstruation, postpartum, and sexual intercourse. Apart from these things, there are several things that are still disputed by scholars.

The meaning of eating and drinking, it turns out that some scholars have expanded its meaning. It is not limited to just putting food into the mouth and swallowing it, but the entry of an object into the 'jauf' or body cavity is also included in the category of eating, even though it does not pass through the mouth and does not reach the stomach. Even though the items included are not in the food category.

Some of them enter through the original holes such as ears, nose, or eyes. There are also those who enter through the anus and genitals.

Dropping something into the ear or cleaning the ear with Cotton Buds and the like, according to the views of the Shafi'i scholars can invalidate the fast if it reaches the inside of the ear (batin al-udzun). Meanwhile, according to another opinion does not break the fast.

Wallâhu a'lam bish-showâb.

Regards!
