Always Busy at Work, Can Asr Prayers Be Done at Zuhr Time?

Assalamualaikum. Ustadz, I want to ask a question.

A friend asked, can the Asr prayer be done at the time after the Zuhur prayer but it has not yet entered the Asr time?

My friend reasoned that he could not pray Asr on time because at Asr time there was always a lot of work that caused him not to be able to pray.

Thank you, Ustadz.

Regards, Ima

ANSWER:

Wassalamu'alaikum warahmatullahi wabarokaatuh.

My sister who is blessed by Allah… may we all become Muslims and Muslim women who are always istiqomah in goodness, especially worship, including establishing prayers.

Prayer is the pillar of religion and the second pillar of Islam. Prayer is the most important bodily practice whose time has been determined by Allah SWT.

الصَّلَاةَ انَتْ لَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ابًا ا

"In fact, prayer is an obligation for a believer whose time has been determined." (Surah An-Nisa: 103)

Then, what if someone is too busy or difficult to get permission, and or loose time to pray in the middle of his work? Is it permissible for him to pluralize taqdim or ta'khir prayer between Zhuhur-Asr or Maghrib-Isha?

The rule of plural prayer is due to a specific purpose or condition, such as traveling 16 farsakh (84 kilometers), or because of heavy rain, or illness (according to Malikiyah scholars), or also because of certain jobs with conditions not always (sometimes only).

Imam Nawawi rahimahullah said: "Some scholars are of the opinion that a believer (not traveling) may jam his prayers if needed as long as it is not made a habit." This is based on the words of Ibn Abbas radhiyallahu anhu which reads:

جمع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بين الظهر والعصر والمغرب والعشاء بالمدينة في غير خوف ولا مطرقيل لابن عباس لم فعل ذلك قال كي لا يحرج أمته

"Raslullâh sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam plural between Zhuhur and Asr and between Maghrib and Isha' in Medina without fear and rain." When asked about this to Ibn Abbs radhiyallahu anhu, he sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam replied: "So as not to burden his ummah."

Shaykhul Islâm Ibn Taymiyyah, explained that industrial workers and farmers when at a certain time experience difficulties (masyaqqah), such as the location of the water which is far from the place of prayer, so that if they go to the water location and purify themselves, it can result in the loss of the work needed. If this is the case, then they may pray at the time of Musytarak (one of the times that can be done in plural), then congregate (combine) two prayers.

In conclusion: What is allowed is only to make multiple prayers because of a certain work that is urgent and cannot be abandoned. It can't be made a habit. If there is a problem with the employer, try to lobby well. If you still can't do it, then continue to do plural prayers by making an effort to find another job that is safer from slander. Rest assured that Allah is the best provider of sustenance, and His rights must take precedence over others.

Wallâhu a'lam bish-showâb.

Regards!
