Ever Forced to Pray in Another Religion, Am I An Apostate?

Assalamualaikum. Ustadz, I want to ask a question.

Look… I used to work in Taiwan, taking care of elderly parents. Then I was invited to a Buddhist temple, along with the boss's brother and grandmother who I looked after, to pray. There I represented the grandmother to do prayers like a Buddhist because the grandmother I was taking care of was completely paralyzed. On behalf of my grandmother I worshiped the statue like a praying Buddha.

After performing the prayer ceremony, they declared that I had become a follower of the Buddha. But in my heart it is still "Lailahaillallah". Then I was given a Buddhist card and books on Buddhist teachings. I felt forced and framed to convert to their religion with the excuse of representing my grandmother to pray.

After praying I still prayed and recited the Koran. But there, I also bathed dogs and ate pork.

What I ask is, am I still a Muslim or am I an apostate? Do I have to pray again or what?

Thank you, Ustadz.

Greetings, Fulanah

ANSWER:

Wassalamu'alaikum warahmatullahi wabarokaatuh.

There are scholars' opinions, the clearest sign of apostasy is prostration to idols. Deliberately and with the intention of glorifying that god, he has apostatized from Islam.

Things that include idols are not only statues, but also the sun, moon, stars, sky, and other things besides the nature of the spirit of Allah SWT.

But if forced, but his heart still believes in Allah, then most of the opinions of the scholars concerned are still believers. Ibn Hazm also states that there is a claim of ijma' in this regard. He said in Maratib Al-Ijma', p. 61,

اتَّفَقُوْا لَى الْمُكْرَهَ لَى الْكُفْرِ لْبُهُ بِالاِيْمَانِ لَا لْزَمْهُ الْكُفْرِ اللهِ الَى

"The scholars agree that a person who is forced to do kufr while his heart is calm on faith, he is not punished as kufr in the sight of Allah Ta'ala."

Therefore, what needs to be done is to do a lot of istighfar, make a lot of shahada, do the 5 daily prayers, pray sunnah taubah, and don't repeat it again.

Wallâhu a'lam bish-showâb.

Regards!
