Explanation of BPOM Triggers Kidney Failure

The Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM RI) has opened up about concerns about the emergence of similar drugs as in Gambia, which triggered 70 cases of West African children dying.

This is because 192 children in Indonesia are also reported to have mysterious or unknown acute kidney failure.

The BPOM RI confirmed that the drugs suspected of triggering acute kidney failure in Gambian children, namely Promethazine Oral Solution, Kofexmalin Baby Cough Syrup, Makoff Baby Cough Syrup, and Magrip N Cold Syrup, were not registered in Indonesia.

None of the drugs produced by Maiden Pharmaceutical, India, has received a distribution permit from BPOM RI.

There are two contents that are associated with the 'culprit' of children experiencing acute kidney failure. Is ethylene glycol (EG) and diethylene glycol (DEG) beyond reasonable limits.

Both of these contents have also been banned by BPOM RI on syrup drug products for children and adults, but EG and DEG called BPOM RI could be at risk of being found as contaminants in drugs.

"EG and DEG can be found as contaminants in glycerin or propylene glycol which are used as additional solvents, BPOM has set a maximum limit of EG and DEG on these two additives according to international standards," explained BPOM RI in a written statement quoted on Wednesday (19/10). /2022/XNUMX).
