The Nature of the Prophet's Prayer: A Look at the Place of Prostration and Reading the Iftitah Prayer (18)

DDHK.ORG - The practice of praying from the time of our ancestors to the present day generally uses the standard of prayer described by the Shafi'i school of thought. This is because the majority of the Indonesian population is generally the Shafi'i school of thought. The scholars who spread Islam in the archipelago, of course, were also scholars of the Shafi'i school of thought. So automatically the practice of prayer is based on the fiqh of the Shafi'i school of thought.

Through this series of articles, DDHK News describes the nature of the prayer of the Prophet Muhammad based on the Shafi'i school, as written by Muhammad Ajib, Lc., MA. in his book "Sahih Evidence of the Prophet's Prayer Ala Madzhab Syafi'iy".

View to the place of prostration

It is sunnah when praying to turn your face towards the place of prostration. This is done in order to get humility in prayer.

From the companions of Ibn Abbas Radhiyallahu 'anhuma said: The Prophet when starting his prayer did not face anywhere except facing the place of prostration. (Hadith narrated by Al-Baihaqi with Sanad Hasan)

Read the iftitah prayer

Reading the iftitah prayer is sunnah. There are many narrations that mention the editorial of the iftitah prayer.

First proposition: From a friend of Ali Radhiyallahu 'anhu said: The Prophet when standing up for prayer said: "Wajjahtu wajhiya lilladzi fathoros samawati wal ardho hanifan musliman wama ana minal mushrikin. Inna prayer wanusuki wa mahyaya wa mamati lillahi rabbil aalamin, la syarika lahu wa bidzalika umirtu wa ana minal muslimin.” (Hadith of Muslim History)

Second argument: From a friend of Abu Hurairah Radhiyallahu 'anhu said: The Prophet when starting his prayer stopped for a moment to read: "Allahumma ba'id baini wa baina khotoyaya kama ba'adta ba'adta bainal masyriqi wal maghrib. Allahumma naqqini minal khotoya kama yunaqqots tsaubul abyadhu minaddanas. Allahummaghsil khotoyaya bilma'i watstsalji wal barodi.” (Hadith narrated by Bukhari & Muslim)

Third proposition: From a friend of Ibn Umar Radhiyallahu 'anhuma said: when we were praying with the Prophet suddenly someone read: "Allahu akbar kabiro wal hamdulillahi katsiro wa subhanallahi bukrotaw wa ashila". Then the Prophet after greeting asked: who had said that sentence? Then someone stood up and said: I am O Messenger of Allah. The Prophet said: I was amazed by this sentence because the gates of Paradise were opened by it. (Hadith narrated by Muslim)

Imam an-Nawawi said: all the hadiths above are authentic hadiths. It is permissible to use any iftitah prayer. However, according to Imam Syafi'i, the afdhol iftitah prayer is the history of a friend of Ali Radhiyallahu 'anhu, then only the history of Abu Hurairah Radhiyallahu 'anhu.
