The Nature of the Prophet's Prayer: Reading Ta'awudz, Ta'min, and Surahs or Verses After Al-Fatihah (19)

DDHK.ORG - The practice of praying from the time of our ancestors to the present day generally uses the standard of prayer described by the Shafi'i school of thought. This is because the majority of the Indonesian population is generally the Shafi'i school of thought. The scholars who spread Islam in the archipelago, of course, were also scholars of the Shafi'i school of thought. So automatically the practice of prayer is based on the fiqh of the Shafi'i school of thought.

Through this series of articles, DDHK News describes the nature of the prayer of the Prophet Muhammad based on the Shafi'i school, as written by Muhammad Ajib, Lc., MA. in his book "Sahih Evidence of the Prophet's Prayer Ala Madzhab Syafi'iy".

Reading ta'awudz

It is sunnah to read ta'awudz with sirr (slowly) before reading Surah Al-Fatihah. And also sunnah to be read at every rakaat prayer. Whether in the first, second, third or fourth rakaat.

First proposition: The hadith narrated by the companion of Abu Said al-Khudri radhiyallahu anhu: that the Prophet said ta'awudz. (Hadith narrated by Abu Dawud)

Second argument: And when you read al-Quran So take refuge in Allah (reading ta'awwudz) from the accursed devil. (Surat an-Nahl: 98)

Reading ta'min

Reading ta'min (amen) after reading Surah Al-Fatihah is sunnah. This sunnah applies to the imam, the congregation, and also those who pray alone.

From the companions of Abu Hurairah radhiyallahu anhu that the Prophet said: if the priest says "amen" then say "amen". Because whoever has ta'minya together with the ta'minnya of the angels then his sins are forgiven by Allah SWT. (Hadith narrated by Bukhari & Muslim)

Surah or verse after Al-Fatihah

It is sunnah to read some verses or letters in al-Quran when finished reading Surah Al-Fatihah. This sunnah is recited in the first and second rak'ahs and only applies to the imam and those who pray alone. As for the congregation, there is no need to read the letter or verse after al-Fatihah.

From a friend of Abu Qatadah Radhiyallahu anhu that the Prophet when praying the midday prayer in the first and second rak'ahs read Al-Fatihah and other letters. As for the third and fourth rak'ahs the Prophet only read Surah al-Fatihah only. (Hadith narrated by Bukhari & Muslim)
