The Nature of the Prophet's Prayers: Ruku', I'tidal and Tuma'ninah (6)

DDHK.ORG - The practice of praying from the time of our ancestors to the present day generally uses the standard of prayer described by the Shafi'i school of thought. This is because the majority of the Indonesian population is generally the Shafi'i school of thought. The scholars who spread Islam in the archipelago, of course, were also scholars of the Shafi'i school of thought. So automatically the practice of prayer is based on the fiqh of the Shafi'i school of thought.

Through this series of articles, DDHK News describes the nature of the prayer of the Prophet Muhammad based on the Shafi'i school, as written by Muhammad Ajib, Lc., MA. in his book "Sahih Evidence of the Prophet's Prayer Ala Madzhab Syafi'iy".

Ruku' and tuma'ninah

The position of bowing in prayer is obligatory. Ruku' must also be accompanied by thuma'ninah which is equally obligatory. As for the level of thuma'ninah at least read the tasbih once.

In the Shafi'i school, it is sunnah to have the etiquette of bowing, saying takbir, and raising both hands. In the matter of bowing ', the Shafi'i school uses the authentic evidence narrated by Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim, "From the companion of Abu Hurairah radhiyallahu 'anhu regarding people whose prayers are considered bad, that the Prophet said to him: then bow until thuma'ninah in a state of bowing'." (Hadith narrated by Bukhari & Muslim).

I'tidal and tuma'ninah

I'tidal is a position in which a person stands straight after getting up from ruku' with the hands not touching. I'tidal includes the pillars of prayer that must be done accompanied by thuma'ninah.

When i'tidal it is sunnah to recite tasmi' (سَمِعَ اللهُ لِمَنْ ) and raise both hands simultaneously. It is also sunnah to read a prayer Rabbana lalak hamdu etc.

In the matter of i'tidal, the Shafi'i school uses a valid argument narrated by Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim, "From the companion of Abu Hurairah radiyallahu 'anhu regarding people whose prayers are considered bad, that the Prophet said to him: then raise your head until thuma'ninah standing (i'tidal). (Hadith narrated by Bukhari & Muslim)
