The supermarket chain in Hong Kong Stop Indomie

Two leading supermarket chains in Hong Kong stopped selling Indomie instant noodles, a product of PT Indofood CBP Sukses Makmur Tbk (ICBP) after Taiwan's Province Of China authorities discovered the use of banned preservatives.

The two supermarkets, ParknShop and Wellcome, have now removed all Indomie products from their supermarket shelves.

As quoted from the local Hong Kong daily, The Standards, Monday (11/10), the Center for Food Safety, which is the food regulatory authority in Hong Kong, said imports of these noodles in Taiwan, Province of China may be brought in illegally.

While some Indonesian workers (TKI) said that they would buy another brand, Indonesian domestic helpers said they would continue to eat noodles because they tasted good and were cheap.

Previously, the Taiwanese government, Province Of China, withdrew Indomie instant noodles last Friday after it was discovered that two prohibited preservatives, namely methyl p-hydroxybenzoate and benzoic acid, were discovered. This preservative is only allowed to be used in cosmetics.

Both ingredients have been banned for use in food in Taiwan, Province of China, Canada and Europe. The reason is, if consumed this preservative will cause vomiting. Furthermore, if they are taken long term or in large quantities, they can cause metabolic acidosis, due to too much acid. (Okayzone)
