Fighting for Food at the Mosque, 14 People Killed

Scores-Killed-in-China-Mosque-StampedeDDHK News, China - As many as 14 people were reportedly killed and 10 others injured as a result of jostling for food at a mosque in Ningxia, China.

The rioting began when a raid on a traditional lunch that was handed over to people attending an event to commemorate local religious leaders.

The injured were hospitalized. Four people are in critical condition. Photos posted onislam.net showed a large crowd, most of them male and many wearing skullcaps, standing outside the green mosque after the incident.

Clothes and shoes can be seen scattered on the ground. The investigation is ongoing at the mosque in Xiji, about 280 kilometers south of the Yinchuan regional capital.

Ningxia, in northern China, is home to the Hui Chinese majority who are mostly Muslim, but different from the Xinjiang Uighurs.

According to government statistics, the six million Hui make up about 36 percent of the province's population with Xiji as one of the largest Hui population centers.
