Distinguishing Problems as Tests or Warnings

ASKING:

Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings.

Ustadz, I want to ask a question. How do we know the problem we are facing is a test or a warning from Allah SWT for the sins we have committed?

Thank you, Ustadz.

Salam,

Fulanah

ANSWER:

Wa'alaikumussalam warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.

Bismillah ... Trials and trials are a necessity for every human being, especially for believers. Because with that test a person can know whether his faith is sincere and true or not. Allah SWT said:

{سورة العنكبوت: -٣}

"Alif Lãm Mîm (1). Do people think that they will be left alone by simply saying: "We have believed", and they are not tested? (2). And indeed We have tested the people before them, so Allah will surely know those who are true and will certainly know those who are lying ”. [Surah Al-'Ankabut: 1-3]

Then, how can we know whether the problem we are facing is a test from Allah or a warning from Him?

There are two reasons for the arrival of calamities or tests that come our way:

1) First, because of the immoralities and sins we have committed, whether small or large, and Allah wants to repay everything directly to us in the world.

Allah SWT said:

"And whatever bad happens to you, it is from (your) own fault". [Surah An-Nisã ': 79]

From the best friend of Anas bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

"If Allah wants goodness to His servants, then He will hasten for him punishment in the world. And if Allah wants evil to His servants, then He will hold for him (punishment) so that Allah will give it on the Day of Judgment. (HR Tirmidhi)

2) Second, because Allah wants to wash away our sins, then elevates our status in this world and the hereafter by rewarding us with limitless patient people. Because actually a degree will not be lifted without being removed from sin.

Rasulullah SAW said:

"In fact, the amount of reply corresponds to the size of the exam. And if Allah loves a people, then He tests them. Whoever is pleased, then for him is pleased, and whoever is angry, then for him is also angry. (HR Tirmidhi)

From Aisyah ra, the Messenger of Allah said:

"Nothing befell a believer, including a thorn or more than him, unless Allah raises him one degree, or Allah removes it because of an error". (Narrated by Bukhari)

So how do we know whether what befell us is a test or a warning?

There are two ways to find the answer:

1) If it happens to a Muslim who is an expert in immorality, even one who is openly committing his sins, then most likely it is a warning from Allah and even the torture that was immediately rushed to remove his sins. Because the removal of sins must take precedence over the exaltation of degrees.

2) However, if something happens to an obedient and prayerful Muslim, then it is most likely a test by which he will be elevated as a form of glory that Allah has given him.

The scholars explain to us, among the signs of testing that can wash away sins and elevate one's degree is that if a Muslim is afflicted by this, he will be patient and not complain.

Therefore, as Muslims we must always be kind to what happens to us because everything will not happen but because of the will and decree of Allah SWT.

Wallâhu a'lam bish-showâb.
