DD Send Disaster Volunteer Team to Wasior

Dompet Dhuafa (DD) sent two disaster response teams from the Disaster Management Center (DMC) Unit to the flash flood disaster location in Wasior, Papua, Thursday (7/10).

The DMC team was strengthened by local volunteers from both the local area and those sent from Makassar, South Sulawesi. The DMC team consists of a number of rescue workers and doctors.

According to the Director of the DD Program, Arifin Purwakananta, the DMC Team will be there for several weeks until conditions are declared stable. This team will assist with first aid in the form of medical assistance, the establishment of public kitchens, and evacuation of refugees.

Besides that, DD also prepared a team to help build temporary shelters (temporary house), mobile clinic (mobileclinic), and mental healing for children (recovery for children) in the form of the construction of a Cheerful School.

In order to save the refugees, the DMC DD Team also carried out a large-scale evacuation (10/10) by using a ship to Manokwari.

Since Friday (6/10), the DMC DD Team opened a Public Kitchen for the refugees who were staying at the Al-Falah Mosque, Wasior City District. Many residents have experienced difficulty with foodstuffs since the flash floods hit.

The DMC DD team itself, managed to get food from other areas that were not affected by the disaster. In order to obtain food, the Team had to go through a heavy muddy route. "For now, our kerosene supply is only 20 liters," said Robi who was accompanied by the SAR Team and the Medical Team

The DMC DD team also continues to spray disinfectants to prevent the spread of disease in nearby locations, assisted by local volunteers.

Some of the Team members are now in Manokwari serving the Wasior refugees who were sent there. "All refugees will be transported to Manokwari, and those who are currently in Nabire will be moved to Manokwari," added Robi. (Dompetdhuafa.org). *
