Domestic Workers May Not Live Outside the Employer's House

ASKING: As a domestic worker (PRT), can I live outside my employer's house?

ANSWER: Should not. A Migrant Friend, as a domestic worker, must work and live only at the residence of the Friend's employer, in accordance with the provisions of Article 3 of the standard employment contract. Employers are required to provide Migrant Friends with accommodation free of charge, aka free, in accordance with the standards set out in the “Schedule of Accommodation and Domestic Duties”, which is an attachment and details of Accommodation and Domestic Duties of the work contract.

A domestic worker may only live outside the employer's house with the approval of Hong Kong Immigration, with special conditions.

(For the agreement to stay outside the employer's house which was approved by the Director of Immigration before April 1, 2003, domestic workers are allowed to live in another place outside the employer's house as long as the employer continues to employ the foreign domestic worker for more than 6 consecutive months without termination of the employment contract.)[]
