Does the Return of Savings Investment in the Bank Include Riba?

Does the Return of Savings Investment in the Bank Include Riba?

Assalamualaikum. Ustadz, I want to ask a question.

If we put our savings money, such as being invested in a bank and the bank is loaned to the public for business capital, then we get a return from the money we have invested in the bank, does the result include usury?

Thank you, Chaplain.

Greetings, Fulanah

ANSWER:

Wassalamu'alaikum warahmatullahi wabarokaatuh.

Bismillah… Islam manages all the affairs of its people perfectly, including financial matters. There are so many contracts or financial transactions that are practiced by people in this life, especially in the modern era like today. Where the number of human populations is increasing, so the various ways of transactions related to assets are increasingly varied. One of them is saving.

Saving is one way someone invests in financial matters. Moreover, saving in cooperatives, banks, or other financial institutions. With the hope, the money invested will be managed by the bank, so that people who save will benefit and so will the manager.

As Muslims, we must understand the fiqh of mu'amalah which is related to wealth, because property is one of those that will be accounted for by Allah on the Day of Resurrection. Only lawful assets will be accounted for. Meanwhile, the owner of the unlawful will be punished. Na'udzu billãh.

If the bank that we invest our assets in uses a debt agreement and uses interest, then it is clearly haram because it includes usury. However, if the bank manages its finances with contracts permitted by sharia, such as mudlarabah (profit sharing) or murabahah (sales and purchases contracts with profits), then the law is halal.

Usually, those who use halal contracts are Islamic banks. Although not all pure Islamic banks are 100% sharia, but at least there is an effort that leads to it.

Wallâhu a'lam bish-showâb.

Regards!
