The number of TKI in Malaysia has decreased

The Deputy Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Malaysia, Tatang Budi Utama Razak, revealed that the number of Indonesian workers (TKI) in the neighboring country has decreased.

"This year we get data from immigration, namely TKI, who previously had 1,2 million people, and now only more than 900 thousand," said Tatang Budi Utama Razak during a visit to Entikong, Sanggau Regency, Sunday.

According to him, his party is trying to prevent human exploitation abroad by carrying out a public awareness campaign.

"Public awareness campaigns in pockets where there are likely many TKIs both in Java and outside Java," he explained.

This step is quite effective. The number of Indonesian workers in Malaysia is far away. "Say for example domestic servants four years ago when I was in the early days of work, namely around 400 thousand people who are official, now there are 200 thousand people not to mention in other sectors," he said.

He added, it is necessary to restructure labor relations from negotiations but on the other hand what is the meaning of an agreement if we in the field do not understand and continue to carry out problems.

Tatang also explained that Malaysia is very dependent on foreign workers, and 68 percent of them are Indonesians.

As for the Indonesians who are in Malaysia, they are not only laborers as well as domestic workers and building construction workers, but there are 5.000 expatriates such as in Petronas, banking, universities, information technology, aviation, and in hospitals.

In fact, he continued, some were paid 10 thousand dollars. This shows that Malaysia is very dependent on Indonesia from the experts who are there, especially with TKI.

Tatang Budi came to re-record the various problems at the border.

He conveyed that the Indonesian Embassy in Malaysia and several other representatives such as the Consulate General in several states continued to strive to take steps in addition to handling various political, economic, social, and cultural issues.

According to him, geographical proximity and various conveniences, especially from the past, are still issues that continue to be addressed.

"So, there are a lot of Indonesians because of their ignorance and incomprehension. First, facing pressure or economic action, he has to find a job. On the other hand, third parties are also exploited with their lack of understanding that it is easy for them to be exploited, "he said. Meanwhile, regarding the termination of sending TKI, Tatang explained that it happened when a problem arose with domestic helpers from Indonesia.

He stressed that since May, officially there should be no deliveries.

"But we received reports and saw in the field that there were still deliveries made by general individuals. This is very unfortunate because this is also detrimental to the TKI itself, "he said.

Indonesia is trying to negotiate with Malaysia to make changes in the memorandum of understanding to provide more protection so that incidents that harm TKI do not happen again.

He asked all parties to be patient until the amendment to the memorandum of understanding which provided better guarantees for the TKI could be implemented. (AMONG)
