Sultan HB X Establishes Yogyakarta as the City of the Republic

Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X as the Governor of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) confirmed Yogyakarta as the City of the Republic coinciding with the date of moving the Indonesian capital from Jakarta to Yogyakarta on January 4, 1946.

During the inauguration, Tuesday, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono (HB) X was accompanied by Deputy Governor of DIY Sri Paduka Paku Alam (PA) IX, Yogyakarta Mayor Herry Zudianto, Regent of Bantul Sri Suryawidati, Regent of Sleman Sri Purnomo and Deputy Regent of Gunungkidul Badingah.

"I as the Governor of Yogyakarta will issue a decree, that is, every January 4, Yogyakarta is the City of the Republic and it is mandatory for the public to commemorate it," said Sri Sultan HB X when inaugurating Yogyakarta City of the Republic at the Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Palace Performance.

He invited the entire community to jointly support this as a strength to continue to build togetherness and contribute to the future as part of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI).

Sultan HB X's brief speech in front of thousands of Yogyakarta people who had just conducted a "long march" of the cultural parade as an initial procession before the inauguration was immediately greeted with warm applause.

The coordinator of the committee together with the cultural cadre, Widihasto, said that the inauguration of Yogyakarta City of the Republic has several meanings, including maintaining the values ​​of national patriotism, affirming the political attitude of the people of Yogyakarta based on the mandate of 5 September 1949.

In addition, he hopes, through this inauguration, Yogyakarta will remain a city open to all Indonesian cultures, where modernization can coexist harmoniously with tradition.

"Hopefully the spirit of inaugurating Yogyakarta City of the Republic will permeate all Yogyakarta people," he said.

During the inauguration ceremony, a revolutionary puppet show was also displayed which tells the history of the movement of the Indonesian capital from Jakarta to Yogyakarta.
