Migrant Domestic Workers are Requested to Stay at the Employer's House on Holidays

HONG KONG - The Hong Kong Labor Department, Friday (27/3/2020), again asked migrant domestic workers (PRT) to refrain from gathering and crowding in public places and to remain at their employer's house on holidays . This is to maintain their personal health and reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 in the community.

In light of the latest changes in the state of the coronavirus epidemic in Hong Kong, on March 23, the Government announced increased anti-epidemic measures. This, it is claimed, is in line with the policies adopted by various consulate generals of countries of origin of migrant domestic workers: encouraging their citizens to stay at home as much as possible, avoid crowded places, and practice social distancing.

Migrant domestic workers in Hong Kong are advised to discuss the arrangement and reimbursement of holidays with their respective employers.

According to the Manpower Act, if an employer asks her foreign domestic worker to work on a holiday, the employer must replace her on another day within 30 days after the previous day off. Employers must also notify workers of these arrangements within 48 hours of working.

The Ministry of Labor urged employers to explain the special circumstances currently taking place in Hong Kong, when discussing holiday arrangements with their respective workers.

The Ministry of Manpower also reminds employers not to force their migrant domestic workers to work on their days off. Because, it is a violation of the Labor Law and can be subject to a maximum fine of HK $ 50,000.

For health advice on preventing pneumonia and respiratory infections, please visit the Department of Health's Center for Health Protection website (www.coronavirus.gov.hk/). Information is also available in Indonesian.

If the migrant domestic worker (FDH) and the employer have questions about labor issues, they can ask the Ministry of Manpower for help via a dedicated email account for FDH issues (fdh-enquiry@labour.gov.hk) and an online form on a special portal (www.fdh .labour.gov.hk).
