Many Migrant Workers are Self-Isolating, DDHK Distributes Hundreds of Packages of Food, Medicine, and Vitamins

DDHK.ORG - In March and April 2022, Hong Kong experienced the fifth wave of the Covid outbreak. Many residents of Negeri Beton were infected, including Indonesian migrant workers.

As the number of people who have tested positive for Covid has exceeded the capacity of hospitals, the Hong Kong Government has asked those infected with mild symptoms to self-isolate at home. In response to this, Dompet Dhuafa Hong Kong (DDHK) distributed hundreds of aid packages for Indonesian migrant workers who are currently in self-isolation and need food, medicine, and vitamins.

“300 packages were distributed through our own program, 95 packages in collaboration with PolyU (The Hong Kong Polytechnic University). So in total there are 395 packages," said General Manager of DDHK, M. Imam Baihaqi, Friday (15/4/2022).

On March 12, 2022, medicines and vitamins shipped from Indonesia ordered by DDHK arrived in Hong Kong. The distribution of food, medicine, and vitamins is also carried out through PMI's friends who are currently in self-isolation. The friend can visit the DDHK office in Causeway Bay. In addition, friends who are asked for help can also meet members of the DDHK Volunteer Team to receive assistance packages.

Through its volunteers, DDHK also provides delivery services for PMIs who are currently in self-isolation but have no friends who are able to help fetch aid packages to the DDHK office. The aid packages are then hung on the door or placed in front of the door of the flat where PMI is undergoing self-isolation.

"In addition to being delivered directly to the destination address by a team of volunteers, we also send some packages to PMI addresses in need via the post office. We also distribute some packages through the PMI organization. We also sent several packages to Macau,” said Imam.

The aid package distributed by DDHK for Indonesian migrant workers who are undergoing self-isolation includes Panadol, vitamins, honey, sanitary napkins, and masks. DDHK also delivered packages of cooked food and instant food to several PMIs who made special requests.

Meanwhile, the distribution areas for food, medicine and vitamins include Shau Kei Wan, Lohas Park, Tuen Mun, Tsuen Wan, Kwai Cung, Tseung Kwan O, Tsing Yi, Yuen Long, North Point, Tin Hau, Wan Chai, Fo Tan, Sha Tin, Tai Wai, Mong Kok, Hung Hom, Tsim Sha Tsui, Yau Ma Tei, Kowloon Bay, Ngau Tau Kok, Sham Tseng, Sai Kung, Mei Foo and Macau. "In the situation of the fifth wave of the Covid outbreak, which can be said to be the most severe in Hong Kong during the pandemic, many friends of Indonesian migrant workers have also been affected. Therefore, we are also responding to this incident by providing assistance in the hope of lightening their burden," said Imam Baihaqi.

Meanwhile, the 95 aid packages as a result of the collaboration between DDHK and PolyU, began to be distributed on April 1, 2022. The packages contained 30 units of rapid antigen test, 20 units of face masks, 4 units of face shield, 10 pairs of gloves, 60 units of children's masks, 50 units adult mask, and oximeter. Aid packages distributed to ethnic minority groups in Hong Kong, carried out at the DDHK office in Causeway Bay. Namely, citizens of Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Nepal, India and Nigeria.

Prior to this period, DDHK also distributed aid packages in the form of medicine and food for PMIs who were undergoing quarantine at hotels appointed by the Hong Kong Government. Apart from being delivered by volunteers, Imam baihaqi, General Manager of DDHK, also delivered aid packages to several quarantine hotels. [DDHKNews]
