Khofifah: 1,7 Million East Java Residents Extremely Poor

DDHK.ORG - The extreme poverty rate in East Java this year reached 4,4 percent or 1.746.990 people. Extreme poverty, according to the World Bank, is a condition in which the population only has an income of less than US$1,9 or around Rp. 27.075 per day.

This fact was conveyed by the Governor of East Java, Khofifah Indar Parawansa. "Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) there are 4,4 percent of the population of East Java or 1.746.990 people who fall into the extreme poor category," said Khofifah, Thursday (30/9/2021), as reported by CNN Indonesia.

Based on data from the BPS National Socio-Economic Survey, this year's extreme poverty rate tends to decrease from last year's 4,5 percent. In terms of numbers, it also decreased from the previous 1,81 million people.

Meanwhile, East Java's poverty rate this year increased from 11,09 percent to 11,40 percent. Last year, the number of poor people in this province was recorded at 4.419.100 people (nationally 26,42 million people). This year it rose to 4.572.730 people (nationally 27,54 million people).

"In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the rural economy is relatively more resilient than urban areas. Rural communities are mostly engaged in the agro or agriculture sector, while urban communities depend on the trade and service sectors," said Khofifah.

5 District Pilot Project

Governor Khofifah also revealed that currently there are 5 districts in East Java that are pilot project areas for poverty reduction acceleration. Namely, Bangkalan, Sumenep, Probolinggo, Bojonegoro, and Lamongan.

"This effort involves various cross-sectoral OPDs (regional organizations) in the East Java Provincial Government. This of course requires a convergence of funding from the central government, provincial budgets, district/city budgets and CSR," said the governor who is also the General Chair of Muslimat Nahdlatul Ulama.
