The Law of Removing Gray Hair

What is the ruling on plucking gray hair?

ANSWER:
Wassalamu'alaikum warahmatullahi wabarokaatuh.
Gray hair is gray hair caused by several things. One of them is the aging factor. For some people, the growth of gray hair is very disturbing confidence in front of others.
Therefore, those who think gray hair interferes with their appearance often dye it black to disguise it. In fact, it is precisely the color yellow or red that is allowed, while the color black is not allowed.
The sign of gray hair at a young age according to Islam is a reminder of death. Humans often forget that life in this world is only temporary. Therefore, Allah SWT in the Qur'an Surah Fatir verse 37 says about the command to think when seeing signs from Allah, including regarding gray hair.
Regarding the law of removing gray hair, according to the scholars of the Shafi'i school of thought—as stated by Muhyiddin Syarf an-Nawawi in his book al-Majmu' Syarh al-Muhadzdzab—that it is makruh to remove gray hair. This is based on the words of the Prophet Muhammad:
لَا ا الشَّيْبَ الْمُسْلِمِ الْقِيَامَةِ
"Do not pluck gray hair because it is the light of the Muslims on the Day of Resurrection." (Narrated by Abu Dawud, at-Tirmidhi, and Nasa'i).
The virtues of people who do not pluck gray hair include:
- Allah will record it goodness;
- Eliminate errors;
- Will elevate the status of a Muslim because of the gray hair he keeps in the world.
Therefore, for those of you who have gray hair, there is no need to worry and be ashamed of their gray hair because gray hair is the light of Muslims on the Day of Resurrection.
