Angpao money from non-Muslims, should you also pay zakat?

Peace, mercy and blessings of God

Ustadz, I want to ask about income zakat.

What in Islam if someone has angpao money (non-Muslim gift money) and overtime pay. Do you have to pay zakat mal with it?

Thank you, Ustadz.

Greetings, Fulanah

ANSWER:

Peace be upon you and God's mercy and blessings be upon you

Thanks for the question. Transactions in muamalah (human relations) cannot only be carried out among Muslims. But it is also common among religious people, as long as there are no elements that are forbidden in Islam.

The income we have from buying and selling or ujrah (wages), then we have an obligation to issue property rights. Given to mustahik, as long as our acceptance reaches the nishab (minimum limit), which is 85 grams per year.

So if we have an income per month for example IDR 8 million x 12 months = IDR 96 million, while the price of gold per gram is IDR 900 thousand, then the nishab of zakat maal from our income is 85 × 900.000 = IDR 76 million rupiah per year.

Then it can be issued zakat of 2,5%. Can be paid annually, or issued monthly, or upon receipt.

Wallâhu a'lam bish-showâb.
