Hong Kong Government Suggests BMIs Be Provided Soft Loans

Chairman of the Hong Kong Domestic Workers Association, Joseph Law Kaw-din, said that the Indonesian Consulate in Hong Kong (KJRI) would only provide employment contracts to Indonesian citizens who obtained jobs through agents. This is different from the Philippine Consulate which does not require an agent.

DDHK News, Hong Kong - Erwiana's torture has led to a discourse on changes in the recruitment of migrant workers in the city. The Hong Kong government suggested that Indonesian Migrant Workers (BMI) be granted soft loans.

According to Hong Kong's Minister of Manpower and Welfare, Matthew Cheung Kin-Chung, officials from Indonesia responded positively to the suggestion. Loans will be given to those who work as domestic helpers.

"Many domestic workers, especially from Indonesia, are already faced with training fees and installments for agents before starting work," Cheung said, as quoted okezone.com from South China Morning Post  (27 / 1 / 2014).

“I recently spoke with officials from Indonesia asking if they could give sympathy for their citizens (who are in Hong Kong) and provide soft loans. Their initial response was very positive, "he continued.

According to Cheung, the loan can be used to pay employment agencies. Most workers have debts to agents. As a result, it is difficult for workers to stop working if they experience torture because they are aware that they still have debts that must be paid to the agency.

Spokesperson for the Asian Migrant Co-Ordinatong Body, Eni Lestari, assessed that this loan will not be of much help. According to him, the labor agencies can pressure the families of the workers to pay the money that the agents have spent.

Erwiana's torture drew the attention of many parties. The tortured employer, Law Wan-Tung, was released from detention on bail and was not allowed to leave Hong Kong.

Before being arrested, Law tried to escape abroad. His attempt failed after being intercepted by officers at the airport. Now Law is getting ready to attend trial on his torture case on March 25, 2014. (ed / okezone.com / scmp.com / localhost / project / personal / ddhongkong.org / ddhongkong.org). *
