Michigan Muslim Students Hold Headscarf Campaign

MichiganStudents-Look-Beyond-HijabDDHK News, United States - Muslim students at Central Michigan University held a special event to allow non-Muslim students to try on hijab clothing. This event offers a different cultural experience about Islam.

"The reaction was extraordinary," said Mishari Alkhuwaiter, an alumnus from Saudi Arabia and President of the Muslim Student Association (MSA), Tuesday (22/4). "The people of Mount Pleasant are usually open-minded and likeable."

The event entitled "Under the Hijab" was held in early April at Bovee University Center CM University. A total of 31 participants (non-Muslim female students) also tried the hijab.

A similar event, organized by the Muslim Student Association (MSA) at Eastern Michigan University, last December, also offered non-Muslim female students the opportunity to try on the hijab for a day.

The headscarf campaign is part of an effort to break media stereotypes that often misrepresent women in Islamic culture.

Muslims in the United States are estimated to be between six and seven million. Pew's recent research found that American Muslims are the most moderate in the world. (mel / onislam.net / localhost / project / personal / ddhongkong.org / ddhongkong.org). *
