I am now in Indonesia. While working at Hong Kong, I still have credit dependents at one of the Telkom credit sellers named Dewi in Causeway Bay.
In the past, I bought credit by transferring the voucher. Once a month I pay for it. At that time, I suddenly had to go home. So, until now I have not had time to pay the last credit debt.
I have contacted my friend who is still in Hong Kong, asking him to find Dewi and pay my debt of HK$400 to Dewi. Later I will replace the money with rupiah according to the current exchange rate.
However, after looking for it, my friend couldn't find it. I intend to pay off my debt, how do I do it, Ustadz? Please enlighten.

Wassalamu'alaikum warahmatullahi wabarokaatuh.
Bismillah… The way to pay off the debts of people who have lost contact or whose whereabouts are unknown is by first finding as much information as we can. Even if that effort has not yet yielded results, then we can use the second method, namely we give charity with the nominal amount of our debt to the person while the reward is intended for him. Even if it turns out that in the future we are destined to meet that person, then we are obliged to tell him about our alms from our debt whose reward is intended for that person. If he is sincere, then the reward for him. But if he still collects his debt, then we are obliged to return the debt to him. The reward for that alms is ours.
As for the problem of debt with a certain currency, then the repayment can be in two ways:
- In the same currency when owed without seeing an increase or decrease in value, or
- With a different currency when owed, it must be the same as the current exchange rate or when repaying the debt.
