It is strongly suspected that the strong cause of cases of acute kidney failure is due to drug syrup containing ethylene glycol (EG) and diethylene glycol (DEG) contaminants beyond the safe threshold.

Pharmaceutical companies have been investigated by Bareskrim Polri and the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM). In recent times, they have also investigated a number of pharmaceutical companies regarding the contamination of dangerous ingredients in the syrup.

At least three pharmaceutical companies producing syrup drugs are being investigated, namely PT Afi Farma Pharmaceutical Industry (AF), PT Yarindo Farmatama and PT Universal Pharmaceutical Industries (UPI).

The three companies are suspected of obtaining supplies of raw material for drug solvents, namely propylene glycol (PG) which has been contaminated with EG and DEG beyond safe limits. The supply of the solvent is suspected to have been obtained from a pharmaceutical raw material supply company, CV Chemical Samudera.

This is also being investigated by investigators. From the results of an investigation into CV Chemical Samudera, the police suspect that the raw material supplier company mixed PG substances with EG contamination.

“It is suspected that the perpetrators used drums or barrels labeled fake or used Dow. Then, compounding, adding, or mixing EG contaminants," said Karo Penmas, Public Relations Division of the National Police, Brigadier General Ahmad Ramadhan, in his statement, Friday (11/11/2022).
