Chances of Covid Cases in Hong Kong Starting to Drop

DDHK.ORG - Chuang Shuk-kwan, from the Hong Kong Center for Health Protection (CHP), said on Sunday, September 11, 2022, that there were signs that local Covid cases were falling. However, the condition still needs to be observed longer to see if cases are indeed leading to a decline.

“In recent days, the caseload seems to have dropped a bit. There are signs of a decline in the total number. But we still need to see in a longer period of time how things are," said Chuang, while delivering the daily updates on Covid cases, as reported by RTHK, Monday (12/9/2022).

Officials at Hong Kong's health authorities are currently watching to see if cases involving the more contagious Omicron BA.5 subvariance have peaked. And, will there be an increase in cases after the Mid-Autumn Festival, September 11-12, 2022.

"Local cases involving BA.5 now account for about 65 percent of all local cases," Chuang said.

RTHK also published the opinion of a government pandemic adviser, Lau Yu-lung, who predicted cases would peak in about a week's time. Recorded, there have been around 10.000 to 11.000 cases a day in the last 10 days in Hong Kong.

Around 2.700 Covid patients are being treated in public hospitals, and 12 are in intensive care. A total of 11 Covid patients have died, although five of them are believed not to be directly related to the virus.

On Sunday alone, there were 9.033 new infections in Hong Kong. This includes 129 imported cases. Meanwhile, on Monday, September 12, the Center for Health Protection said there were 7.772 local Covid cases, of which 1.876 were identified through nucleic acid tests and 5.896 through rapid antigen tests.
