British University Holds a Course on the Role of Women in Islam

The University of East Anglia (UEA) UK conducts a course on the role of women in Islam to change misperceptions about Islam in the world media. "A lot of people have written about women and Islam, a lot of people have written about Islam and the media or women and the media, but they haven't been brought together before," said Dr. Eylem Atakav, a graduate of Ankara University and a UAE lecturer.

The 12-week course will focus on topics on women and Islam, which usually have the focus of media coverage, covering issues of the headscarf and marriage.

About 18 third year students have enrolled in the course which starts this week. Atakav hopes that the course will be an important way to change perceptions about Islam, especially about the role of women in Islam.

Journalist and broadcaster Nabila Ramdani believes there is an urgent need to challenge bad stereotypes about Islam. "The media make fun of (Muslim women)," he said. (Mel / OnIslam.net / ddhongkong.org). *
