Smuggling Drugs, Indonesian Citizen Sentenced to 21 Years in Prison in Hong Kong

STORY FROM PRISON

LO WU | HONG KONG - On Sunday (22/9/2019), I was from the volunteer team Dompet Dhuafa Hong Kong together with 6 friends fellow Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) visited Lo Wu Correctional Institution or Lo Wu Prison. They were Ukhti Sri Wahyuni, Yohanna Herminah, Endang Sumartini, Sutarni, Wiji Lestari, and Sister Reni Suherti.

We brought gifts for our friends, fellow Indonesian citizens (WNI) who are currently serving sentences in prison in Lo Wu. Souvenirs in the form of tissues, books, pens, body lotion, lip gloss, hand soap, powder, etc. were handed over to officers to be examined and given to friends who were prisoners.

Inside, we share tasks. I got to visit a mother who was imprisoned for drug abuse. "Apart from users, I have also been with my aunt many times smuggling drugs to China via Hong Kong," said this 26-year-old mother, recounting.

After several times of smuggling, he was finally caught by Hong Kong customs officials. The mother also admitted that she was sentenced to 21 years in prison by the court. Currently, he has served 5 years and received a remission or deduction of 9 years.

The mother who objected to being named also said that there was a friend who was imprisoned since 2013. It has been a long time since he never saw her again, he heard the news that his friend had died in prison. Initially, the body was going to be burned, but The Islamic Union of Hong Kong (IUHK) managed to convince the prison to be able to return the body to the country.

He also said that there were several inmates who contracted HIV / AIDS. Some of them were openly taking the medicine, some were secretly, because they were ashamed to be found out by other prison inmates.

Another story he told, there was an Indonesian citizen whose stomach was bitten by a prisoner from an African country who had spent 10 years in prison. "Maybe he was stressed, so he bit his fellow inmates. Now being treated in a prison hospital, "he said. [Siti Ngatipah]
