When do we say Subhanallah and Masyaallah?

Assalamualaikum. Ustadz, I want to ask a question.

If we admire the beauty of God's creation. what lafadz should we say? Is it subhanallah or mashaallah?

Thank you, Ustadz.

Greetings, Fulanah

ANSWER:

Wassalamu'alaikum warahmatullahi wabarokaatuh.

Bismillah… The words subhanallah (glory to Allah) and masyaallah (by Allah's will) are 2 thoyyibah (good) sentences that should be spoken frequently and spontaneously by a believer in his daily life.

Then, when do we say subhanallah and when do we say masyaallah?

The words of subhanallah are spoken when we are surprised by events that are not proper or out of the ordinary and of course it is all by the will of Allah. It is as narrated in the hadith that once the Messenger of Allah passed by the friend of Abu Hurairah, but he turned away and left the Prophet. When Abu Hurairah returned, the Prophet asked: "Where were you?" He replied: "I was junub and then took a bath, because I do not want to be with you in a state of junub". The Messenger of Allah was astonished by the attitude of Abu Hurairah, then he said: "Subhanallah... verily a believer is not unclean". (Narrated by Bukhari Muslim)

In Surah Al-Isra 'verse 1 Allah also explains:

لَّذِیۤ لَیۡلࣰا ٱلۡمَسۡجِدِ لۡحَرَامِ لَى لۡمَسۡجِدِ لۡأَقۡصَا

{سورة الإسراء: }

"Glory be to Allah who has traveled His servant (Muhammad) at night from the Haram Mosque to the Al-Aqsa Mosque". {Surat al-Isra': 1}

Lafazh subhanallah above shows a sense of wonder that is beyond the limits of human reason, but as an expression that God can will as above as a rejection of the assumptions of people who do not believe it.

As for the saying of masyaallah, it is said because we are amazed at the beauty and advantages of something such as wealth, beauty, scenery, and so on.

Saying masyaallah can also be a person's fortress against something he admires, both his and not. So that with it will be protected from 'ain (diseases that come from envious eyes). Because envy (hasad) is from the devil and the devil that must be fought with masyaallah words.

This is in accordance with the story of the garden owner whose garden was destroyed by God because of his pride,

لَوۡلَاۤ لۡتَ لۡتَ مَا اۤءَ للَّهُ لَا لَّا للَّهِۚ

{سورة الكهف: }

"And why when you enter your garden do not say mãsyaallãh lã quwwata illã billãh (indeed, by Allah's will, all this is realized, there is no power except with Allah's help)". {Surat al-Kahf: 39}

So, before we share photos of us, our parents, children, relatives, friends, or anyone on social media, for example, say masyaallah first, so that we may avoid 'ain' disease that comes from eyes that don't like the photos we share.

Wallâhu a'lam bish-showâb.

Regards!
