Want to get married in Hong Kong, prospective non-Muslim spouses want to become converts

Assalamualaikum. Ustadz, I want to ask a question.

Marriage problems in Hong Kong. My candidate is non-Muslim, wants to convert to Islam and marry Islamically.

If my candidate wants to become a convert and wants to say 2 sentences of creed, what is the procedure? Is there a place and kiai in Hong Kong to guide him?

Thank you, Ustadz.

Regards, Fulan/Fulanah

ANSWER:

Wassalamu'alaikum warahmatullahi wabarokaatuh.

Bismillah... If a Muslim or Muslim woman wants to get married, then marry a partner of faith. The law for Muslim men marrying non-Muslims is as follows:

  1. If the woman is a Muslim woman other than the Kitabiyah (people of the book; Jews or Christians), then the law is haram.
  2. If the woman is a Kitabiyah (Jew or Christian), then the law is allowed.

However, marrying a Muslim woman is certainly better, safer, and stays away from problems in the future. Because marriage is worship, of course we expect a more solemn and solemn worship if we marry a Muslim woman.

Some scholars allow Muslim men to marry Jewish or Christian women with evidence and also because men's illat (reason) is emotionally and psychologically stronger than women, so there is great hope that in the future his Jewish or Christian wife can embrace Islam. However, the reality is that nowadays many Muslim men marry Jewish or Christian women, instead he apostates and chooses his wife's religion.

So choosing a partner who is both Muslim is very urgent (important and main).

My advice, first Islamize your partner in the mosque led by an ustadz. If in Indonesia, it can be done at mosques, KUA, or mass organizations that provide certificates. The certificate is just a formality. As for without the certificate, it is legal for someone to convert to Islam.

Information from the Editor: In Hong Kong, you can come to the Islamic Union of Hong Kong office on the 7th floor of Ammar Wan Chai Mosque. There, you can meet Usatdz Abdul Muhaemin, for assistance in Indonesian. If you want to become a Cantonese-speaking convert, you can be assisted by a Hong Kong citizen who is the administrator of the Islamic Union in the same place.

Wallâhu a'lam bish-showâb.

Regards!
