Tina Talisa's Tips to Become a Reliable Speaker

DDHK. ORG Everyone can speak, but not everyone can speak. And, most successful people have something in common, that is, they can make a speech.

This was conveyed by a former national private television presenter, Tina Talisa, when she was a speaker at an online workshop titled Speaking Skills in Public which was held Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) Hong Kong, Sunday (11/10/2020). “Being able to make a great speech doesn't require talent. That is the result of learning, "he said.

Tina Talisa's Tips to Become a Reliable Speaker
GM DDHK, M. Imam Baihaqi, participated in the online workshop for Public Speaking Skills.

Professional speakers, Tina insisted, didn't try to speak like everyone else. Nor do they give speeches without preparation.

8 Great Speech Steps

On that occasion, Tina conveyed 8 steps to be able to give a great speech. Namely, take control of your stage fright, choose your subject, gather your ideas and information, and organize your speech materials.

Other steps, plan the beginning of your speech, plan the ending of your speech, practice your speech, and present your speech.

A person can appear reliable when giving a speech, by realizing that he is not alone, multiplying the experience to eradicate stage fright, and believing that the audience is there to listen to him.

Alternatively, concentrate on what you have to say rather than how to say it, let the nervousness get out of your way, and prepare.

Tina also suggested that a speaker analyzes the audience to be faced, the events attended, and analyzes himself as a speaker. To enrich the speech material, Tina also suggested collecting lots of ideas and information, by multiplying examples, quotations, statistics, stories, comparisons, contrasts, and audio visual aids.

A speaker must also be able to organize his speech material by dividing it into three parts. Namely an introduction consisting of an ice breaker and a preview, opening a discussion room, and providing conclusions.

Make a Plan and Practice

A speaker is also required to plan the initial material of his speech. Namely, by stating surprising facts, asking questions, telling jokes, presenting quotes, pointing to historical events, and praising the audience.

Planning should also be made for the final material for the speech. This is done by declaring that he will conclude, summarize the main ideas of the speech, repeat the main points, and combine the summary with repetition.

Apart from that, a speaker must also practice his speech. "Repeat your speech three to six times," said Tina.

A speaker should also practice memorizing ideas instead of words, practice from actual note cards instead of script, and propel himself through the entire speech for each practice. However, it is not recommended to practice excessively, and is required to be able to time the speech.

When it is time to give a speech, there are a number of principles that must be followed. Namely, be yourself, get ready to speak confidently, be prepared before you start speaking, and build contact with the audience. Another principle, start without referring to notes, talk to the audience, avoid grunting, maintain proper posture, appear to be enjoying the speech, use props effectively, and speak loudly enough.
