Drinking zam-zam water is included as a sunnah and part of a series of Umrah services. Namely, after the congregation performs thawaf for 7 times around the Kaaba, the congregation is sunnah to perform absolute sunnah prayers 2 cycles behind or around Maqam Ibrahim, then prays, then it is sunnah to drink Zamzam water by praying. Next Sai, which is walking or jogging from Shofa Hill to Marwah Hill, ending with tahalul or cutting at least 3 strands of hair on the head.
The word Zam-Zam in Arabic means a lot or abundant. As for the Zam-Zam water referred to by the Shari'ah, that is water that comes from the Zam-Zam well. It is located about 38 cubits from the Kaaba.
Named Zam-Zam, according to its meaning, because indeed the water from the well is very much and abundant. It doesn't run out even though it has been taken and carried every day to all corners of the world by Muslims.
Named Zam-Zam, it can also be taken from Hajar's actions. When the Zam-Zam water gushed out, he immediately collected and dammed it.
Another name for Zam-Zam, as is well known, is called barrah (goodness), madhmunah (valuable), taktumu (hidden), hazmah Jibril (Gabriel's excavation), syifa` suqim (medicine for disease), tha'amu tu 'im (food), syarabul abrar (drink of good people), thayyibah (good).
Among the arguments showing the primacy of Zam-Zam water can be mentioned as follows.
عَنْ جَابِرٍ وَابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ رَسُوْلُ اللهِ -صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ-: مَاءُ زَمْزَمَ لم ِاَ شُرِبَ لَهُ : أخرجه أحمد وابن ماجه
"From Jabir and Ibn 'Abbas, Rasulullah Shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam said, Zam-Zam water, depending on the intention of the person who drank it."
In another Hadith:
وَعَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا قاَلَ قَالَ رَسُوْلُ الله – صَلَّى الله ُعَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ -: “خَ Amen ِ”,
“From Ibn 'Abbas, Rasulullah Shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam said, The best water on earth is Zam-Zam. In it there is food that is filling and antidote to disease.”
In addition to the virtues above, it is sunnah for us to increase our prayers through the blessings of zam-zam water, including, as narrated from Ibn 'Abbas, when drinking zam-zam water, he prays:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْماً ناَفِعاً ، وَرِزْقاً وَاسِعاً وَشِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَا ءٍ
"O Allah, we ask You for useful knowledge, abundant sustenance, and healing from every disease."
May we all be able to enjoy Zam-Zam water and become a witness for the prayers that are said to be answered.
