Ustadz, I want to ask a question.
Is it okay if a husband and wife who are far apart and haven't seen each other for several years, then the husband asks for sex via video call?

Bismillah… Including the husband's obligation to his wife is to provide physical and spiritual support. Among the inner livelihood is having intercourse with the wife by having healthy intimate relationships and according to the Shari'a. The wife is also obliged to serve her husband, including in matters of biological needs.
But sometimes husbands and wives can't do it because of the distance and time that separates them. The term is now a long distance relationship between couples is Long Distance Relationship (LDR). Thus, biological needs cannot be channeled properly.
With the advent of technological sophistication, it is very easy for husband and wife to communicate remotely via telephone, even video calls. So that a new question arises, is it permissible for husband and wife to have sex over the phone or commonly called phone sex? Or even by video telephone (video call)?
Of course, this issue has never been discussed by scholars or classical fiqh because there were no telephones at that time. Thus, this issue has only been discussed by contemporary scholars.
Indeed, most of the first to invite sexual intercourse is the husband rather than the wife. Although, it is not wrong for the wife to invite first. Likewise in matters of sexual fantasy, the husband is usually more dominant, so he was the first to take the initiative to invite his wife to have sex via video telephone.
So what is the ruling on this in Islam?
The law of having sex between husband and wife through video calls is allowed as long as the following things are taken into account:
- Safe from others.
This means that husband and wife must ensure that there are only the two of them on the line. Do not let anyone else, even if it is a family member such as children, brothers, sisters, parents, etc. Because the intimate relationship between husband and wife is confidential and should not be disclosed to others.
It was narrated from Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri radiyallãhu 'anhu, the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam said:
أشر الناس الله لة القيامة الرجل لى امرأته ليه ينشر ا
"Indeed, one of the ugliest people in the sight of Allah on the Day of Resurrection will be a man who has intercourse with his wife and then spreads the secret of his bed." (Narrated by Abi Syaibah, Ahmad, Muslim)
Spreading the news after intercourse is not allowed, especially if it is done in the presence of other people, even if only by telephone.
- Make sure not to masturbate or masturbate alone.
Masturbation or masturbation if done with one's own hands is forbidden. But it becomes permissible if the husband does it to his wife or vice versa.
Masturbation or masturbation with one's own hands is only allowed if in an emergency such as lust that has peaked and worries if you fall into adultery. Even Ibn Abidin, a Hanafi cleric, said that it is actually obligatory to do so.
If without masturbation or masturbation then the husband and or wife climax in their phone, then that's okay. It can even relieve tension between the two. Because basically the purpose of marriage is to maintain honor by being able to channel biological needs through things that are permitted by the Shari'a.
