Yogyakarta was Rocked by an Earthquake, the Vibration Reached Central Java and East Java

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a magnitude 6,4 earthquake that shook the south of Kulonprogo, Special Region of Yogyakarta last night. The vibrations were felt in East and Central Java.

Based on the monitoring of the Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, the earthquake had an impact and was felt in the Kulonprogo (DIY) area; Nganjuk (East Java); Kebumen (Central Java) and Ponorogo, East Java with an intensity scale of IV MMI (when many people feel it in the house during the day). Whereas in Kediri and Mojokerto (East Java) the vibrations were felt with an intensity scale of III MMI (the vibrations felt real inside the house. The vibrations felt as if a truck was passing).

He explained that based on modeling results, the earthquake had no potential for a tsunami. BMKG also noted that there were two aftershocks that occurred.

"Until 20.30 WIB, the BMKG monitoring results showed that there were 2 aftershocks with the largest magnitude of M3,9," Daryono said in a written statement, Friday (30/6/2023), as released by CNN Indonesia.

Daryono also explained that taking into account the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a medium-sized earthquake due to the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian and Eurasian plates. "The results of the analysis of the source mechanism show that the earthquake has a mechanism of upward movement (thrust fault)," he said.
