Erwiana Case Session Postponed Again

Hong Kong Erwiana trialDDHK News, Hong Kong - The third trial of the persecution case against Erwiana Sulistyaningsih, Tuesday (29/4/2014), at the Kwun Magistracy Court, Kwun Tong, was postponed again to 20 May 2014.

Previously, the trial which was held on Tuesday (25/3/2014) was brief and was postponed until April 29, 2014 on the grounds that the special evidence for the medical report was not yet complete.

In its press release, Justice for Erwiana and All Migrant Domestic Workers Committee stated that this resignation was at the request of the Prosecutor (representing the Hong Kong government and Erwiana as witnesses) who still need time to consolidate other demands.

After Erwiana's arrival in early April, the Labor Department finally filed a formal (criminal) criminal complaint against Law Wan Tung, Erwiana's employer, for breaching contracts, including not paying wages, not giving holidays and granting the right to terminate contact.

"We are disappointed with this second delay which means delaying justice for Erwiana and the other victims. However, we are happy that the government finally sued Law Wan Tung for breaching the work contract, ”said Sringatin, spokesperson for the Justice for Erwiana and All Migrant Domestic Workers Committee.

When the judge asked Law Wan Tung if he was aware of the criminal charges for breach of contract and he answered “he knew”.

"We hope that this postponement is for the good of Erwiana's case and it will not be postponed again. Hopefully justice will really be given to Erwiana, "added Sringatin.

About 50 Migrant Workers and their supporters carried out a Solidarity action outside the court. They demanded that the Hong Kong government immediately change and repeal the regulations that make migrant domestic workers (PRT) be enslaved.

The JBMI-AMCB Migrant BURUH Alliance will demonstrate May 1, 2014 to the Indonesian Consulate and the Hong Kong Government to demand the abolition of the discriminatory two-week visa rule and visa restrictions, raise the salary to HKD4500, lift the coercion of living with the employer (live-in), apply the rules hours of work and eliminating practices that degrading the dignity of migrant workers.

"We invite Migrant Workers to join in May Day. We'll wear red and gather at Victoria Park at 11 a.m. We call on the Hong Kong and Indonesian governments to immediately end modern slavery, "he concluded. (amy utamy / localhost / project / personal / ddhongkong.org / ddhongkong.org). *
