Number of Covid-19 Patients Rises, 2 September Hong Kong Opens Kai Tak Quarantine Center

DDHK.ORG - On Wednesday, August 29, 2022, Hong Kong Department of Social Welfare officials announced that the Government would open a new quarantine centre, the Kai Tak Centre. This policy was taken due to the continued increase in the occupancy rate of the Temporary Quarantine Center at AsiaWorld-Expo, which indicates an increase in the number of Covid-19 patients and people who are in close contact with them.

"The Department of Social Welfare announced today that due to the increasing occupancy rate of the Temporary Quarantine Center at AsiaWorld-Expo, the Kai Tak Quarantine Center will start operating on September 2," the Hong Kong government website, news.gov.hk, said.

The Kai Tak Quarantine Center will accept nursing home residents for the elderly who have been identified as close contacts by the Center for Health Protection. The quarantine center is equipped with 786 beds, of which 260 will initially be available for use. The department will closely monitor the development of the epidemic and put the remaining beds into service if necessary.

The quarantine center will provide basic food and care support free of charge. Health institutions from The Tung Wah Group of Hospitals and the Haven of Hope Christian Service will form a team to provide temporary care services at the Kai Tak Centre. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health will facilitate medical supervision of the elderly. [DDHKNews]
