Thai Muslims Protest Banning Headscarves in Schools

The Muslim community of Thailand held a peaceful demonstration in front of the Prime Minister's Office, Tuesday (10/1). They protested the Buddhist Middle School's treatment of prohibiting Muslim students from wearing the headscarf.

In the action, the Muslim community said that Wat Nongjok Middle School refused to allow Muslim students to wear the headscarf when entering school. The move contradicts the education ministry's regulations which state that students have the right to choose their uniform.

"Even the education ministry has sent a letter describing the school's actions as an abuse of power," they were quoted as saying nst.com.

On that occasion, the Muslim Community also revealed that a number of teachers and school administrative staff refused to teach and work because some students were wearing headscarves. Therefore, the Muslim community asked Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to provide a solution to the problem.

Minister of Education Woravat Auapinyakul when meeting with the Muslim community, stated that every student with various religious backgrounds has the right to wear school uniforms according to their beliefs. "This issue will be discussed with each school in order to avoid misunderstandings," he said. (nst.com/republika.co.id).*
