Semarang besieged by floods

DDHK.ORG - Floods surrounded the city of Semarang, Central Java, Saturday (6/2/2021). The floods were caused by heavy rains that flushed the capital of Central Java for 12 hours since Friday night.

One of the areas that was flooded was the North Semarang area, including the Kota Lama complex. In the Tanah Mas area, floods have entered residential areas up to 70 centimeters high and are still rising because the rain is still ongoing and causing a number of water channels to overflow. The flood also inundated the Mangkang, West Semarang and East Semarang areas with an average height of 50 centimeters.

Some residents even chose to evacuate, leaving their homes because of the fear that the water level would continue to increase. “I have a small child, so I better take it to a safe place first. The rain is still continuing, surely the inundation will get higher, "said Akyong, a resident of Semarang, as reported Indonesian CNN.

Floods in the Mangkang area paralyzed the Semarang-Kendal Pantura route. The road was impassable by vehicles for more than 3 hours due to the flood that inundated a road section nearly 1 meter high. The rider was asked to make a U-turn and find another route.

The flood also inundated the runway at Ahmad Yani Airport, Semarang. As a result, anvil is risky to use. One flight from Jakarta has been diverted to Juanda Airport, Surabaya. Meanwhile, 7 other flights were delayed. The airport was temporarily closed until 09.00 WIB and extended until 11.00 WIB. [DDHK News]
