Saudi Arabian Government Will Green Up 100 Mosques

DDHK. ORG - Government Arab Saudi is ready to realize green initiatives masjid in various places all over Kingdom. This effort is part of an ambitious climate and environmental initiative.

The head of finance of the Greening of Mosques Initiative, Hamoud Alotaibi, said, for this initiative, the Government of Saudi Arabia plans to have 9 mosques in five steps.

"The first step is 20 mosques, followed by another 20 mosques until we finish and finalize 100 mosques," he said as reported by Ihram.Republika.co.id.

"Although we have plans for another 100 or 200, it hasn't been announced yet."

An Integral Part of Saudi Arabia's Green Initiative

The project is an integral part of the Saudi Green Initiative and was launched last year by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The program falls under the pillar 'increase vegetation cover and reduce land degradation, one of the four SGI pillars on display at the United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP27.

The project is also part of the non-profit vegetation cover foundation “Morooj” and the General Authority for Endowments, under the leadership of the council of ministers for environment, water and agriculture.

It aims to make use of water used for ablution, particularly in mosques, as nearly 65 percent of all water used throughout the Kingdom is used for ablution.

“As much as 65 percent of all water used in mosques is water used for ablution. Taking this advantage, we built and designed a water treatment plant used for ablution to plant more than 300 trees around the mosque,” ​​said Alotaibi.

He added that they also introduced playgrounds for children and landscaping to improve quality of life and increase vegetation cover.

The project aims to turn the mosque area into a family-friendly space with a pedestrian area, while each mosque will have an ablution water treatment plant that will be used to irrigate the planted trees. [DDHK News]
