Australia Has Its First Islamic Museum

Australian Islamic-MuseumDDHK News, Australia - It is hoped that a museum called the Australian Islamic Museum will provide a deeper understanding of Islam in Australia, as well as introduce the contributions of Muslims to world civilization in general.

The first Islamic Museum in Australia opened Monday (3/3/2014) under the name Australian Islamic Museum in the Thornbury area, about 7 kilometers from downtown Melbourne, Victoria.

This museum introduces Islam through art, history, culture and daily stories of Muslims in Australia.

In addition to the five permanent galleries, this museum also has a study center that provides materials about Islam for schools.

The architecture of the Islamic Museum of Australia was designed by Australian architectural firm Desypher, which combines Middle Eastern and Australian designs to reflect Islamic architecture with Australia.

The founder of the Islamic Museum in Australia is a former employee of a private bank in Australia, Moustafa Fahour.

"At that time we discussed the important role of education in understanding Islam and the contribution of Muslims in Australia and other countries," Fahour said as quoted by the website. Australian Radio ABC.

"In Australia there is no place for school students to learn about the artistic heritage of Muslims in a fun way, so we decided to create something and that's where the concept of this museum was born."

In addition, this museum also tries to introduce the contributions of Muslims to world civilization.

Islam itself entered Australia in the 1700s when sailors from Makassar began trading with Bumiputera Australia, long before Europeans settled.

At the end of the 19th century, a group of camel riders came to Australia and helped run infrastructure projects, one of which was The Ghan. This name was taken in honor of the workers who came from Afghanistan who worked on the project.

The Australian Islamic Museum has received support from the government, a number of organizations and the private sector. Several companies, such as one of Australia's largest home goods retailers, are contributing plants and contractors.
