Covid-19 Vaccine Injecting Law

Covid-19 Vaccine Injecting Law

Assalamualaikum. Ustadz, I want to ask a question.

What is the ruling on us using the Covid-19 vaccine produced by BioNTech?

Thank you, Ustadz.

Regards, Fulan/Fulanah.

ANSWER:

Wassalamu'alaikum warahmatullahi wabarokaatuh.

Bismillah… Giving vaccines in the midst of the current Covid-19 pandemic is an effort for us to protect ourselves and others from the spread of the virus. This includes maintaining health protocols. This is in accordance with the hadith of the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam from the companions of Abu Sa'id Al-Khudry radliyallãhu 'anhu:

لَا لَا ارَ (رواه ابن اجه الدرقطني)

"You must not endanger yourself or others." (Narrated by Ibn Majah & Daruquthni)

But before vaccination, we must ensure the halalness of the vaccine to be used. If we are not experts in the field of science such as scholars or not experts in the medical field such as doctors, of course what we follow is the opinion of scholars and doctors in the law of vaccines whether halal or haram.

So far, we have been treated to a lot of confusing news about the development of Covid-19, including vaccines. Even a lot of news circulating that there are several types of vaccines that are haram. The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has issued a fatwa that vaccines that have entered Indonesia such as Sinovac and Astrazeneca are halal. Although there is a fatwa that astrazeneca is haram because the manufacturing process uses pork gelatin as a catalyst, even though in the end the gelatin was abandoned and not contained in Astrazeneca. Likewise with other vaccines such as Pfizer and BioNTech, many world scholars have a fatwa about their halalness and are widely used in Muslim countries. Even the vaccines include those approved by the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as a condition of entry into the country, including for the Umrah and Hajj pilgrimages.

However, if the ingredients and processes are halal but are not good for some people because they have certain chronic diseases, then it must be avoided first because avoiding harm (danger) is obligatory.

Wallâhu a'lam bish-showâb.

Regards!
