Provisions Regarding Aqiqah

DDHK.ORG - Provisions Regarding Aqiqah

Peace, mercy and blessings of God

Ustadz, I want to ask a question.

First, if we are aqiqah, is it not permissible for the biological father of the baby who is holding his child to have his hair cut?

Second, if the baby girl is one goat. Isn't it okay to add chicken, considering the invitation that eating one goat is not enough?

Third, should families who have an intention not eat the aqiqah meat?

Jazakumullah khairon sir Ustadz for the answer.

Thank you, Ustadz.

Greetings, Fulanah

ANSWER:

Bismillah… Aqiqah is an expression of gratitude from parents to Allah Subhanahu wata'ala for the gift of a baby born into the world by slaughtering a goat or sheep. The legal aqiqah is sunnah muakkad according to the majority of scholars.

The Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam said:

لد له لد عن لده ليفعل (رواه الرزاق ابن اود النسائي الحاكم)

"Whoever is blessed with a child, then he likes to devote it (aqiqahi him), then let him do it." (HR Abdur Razzaq, Ibn Abi Syaibah, Ahmad, Abu Dawud, Nasa'i, & Hakim)

The child who is diaqiqah is also sunnah to have his hair shaved at the time of the aqiqah itself, which is on the seventh day of his birth. Although, aqiqah may be postponed on the 14th, 21st day, and multiples thereof or before the child reaches puberty.

From Samurah bin Jundub radliyallahu 'anhu, the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam said:

لُّ لاَمٍ السَّابِعِ لَقُ (رواه الترمذي)

"Every child is mortgaged with his aqiqah. Slaughtered him on the seventh day, shaved his head and gave him a name.” (HR Ahmad & Tirmidhi)

The hadith above explains that it is the baby who is shaving, not the parents who are shaved. It is permissible for the father to shave his child's hair himself or be represented by someone else who is an expert in shaving the baby's hair. Or, it is also permissible for each family member to take some of the baby's hair as is usually done in our society. As for the father who carries his child during the aqiqah, it is permissible for him to shave his own hair because there is no prohibition in this regard.

For boys it is Sunnah to have aqiqah with two goats, and for girls with a goat. As the hadith of Umm Mu'minin, 'Aisha radhiyallahu'anha, she said:

لَ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه لم- الْغُلاَمِ اتَانِ افِئَتَانِ الْجَارِيَةِ اةٌ

“Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) ordered them to have two goats for boys and one goat for girls. (HR Tirmidhi no. 1513)

But if economic conditions do not allow, then for boys it is permissible only with a goat as narrated from Ibn Abbas radliyallahu anhuma, he said:

ل الله لى الله ليه لم الحسن الحسين ا ا (رواه اود)

"The Messenger of Allah -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- did aqiqah Hasan and Husayn (each) with a sheep." (HR Abu Dawud)

It is permissible for a person to increase the portion of the aqiqah animal while he is able and intends to give alms. Even according to the majority of scholars, it is permissible to aqiqah with larger animals such as camels or cows.

If there is a person who performs aqiqah for his daughter with a goat and is worried that there is not enough meat to share, then for him there is no need to add animals other than four-legged ones such as chickens. Because the chicken is not an animal that is prescribed for aqiqah. It was enough for him to share what was there. Because this Shari'a is made to make it easier, not to make it difficult. The distribution of aqiqah is better distributed in ripe condition and delivered.

As for the family, it is permissible for them to eat aqiqah meat as needed. Because the sunnah distribution of aqiqah is like the distribution of sacrificial animals. As narrated from Ummul a believer Aisyah radiyallahu anha, that the Messenger of Allah -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- said:

لوا ادخروا ا.”

"Eat, save, and give alms." (HR Muslim)

There is an opinion that one third is for the family to eat alone, a third for the poor, and a third for gifts. The more you donate, the better.

Wallâhu a'lam bish-showâb.

Hope it works!

Peace, mercy and blessings of God
