Scholars from various schools of thought have discussed the law of prayer while carrying and reading mushafs Al-Quran. Of course, this is done after reading Surah Al-Fatihah in the first and second cycles. There is a difference of opinion between them;

1. Hanafiyah and Dhohiriyah scholars are of the opinion that the act of reading a mushaf during prayers can damage the prayer because it is included in the type of movement or additional activity in the prayer.

2. Malikiyah scholars are of the opinion that it is makruh if it is fardlu prayer and it is permissible if it is sunnah prayer.

3. Syafi'iyah and Hanabilah scholars allow this both in fardlu and sunnah prayers.

From the differences of opinion above, we can conclude that it is permissible to read the Mushaf in prayer. But memorize the verses Al-Quran then reading it in prayer without looking at the mushaf is much better than reading it with the mushaf.

Without reading the mushaf, it will make our prayers more focused and solemn, especially if our eyes are fixed on the place of prostration. On the other hand, if you pray while reading the Mushaf, your eyes are definitely not focused on the place of prostration.

Then what is the ruling on praying while carrying and reading the guide to prayer and reading it?

If we make an analogy (qiyas) with the law of reading mushafs in prayer, then this is permissible. However, what we must pay attention to is that reading a prayer manual during prayer is not the same as reading a Mushaf. Because prayer readings are simpler and tend not to need to change so they are easy to memorize.

Different from Al-Quran which has 30 juz, 114 letters, and 6236 verses that not all Muslims are able to memorize. Even Rasulullah shallallãhu 'alaihi wasallam liked to vary in reading verses or Surahs after Al-Fatihah, from short to long.

So if someone feels that he has memorized a little, then he cannot read a long verse or letter without looking at the Mushaf when praying.

My advice is if you really don't know the prayer readings by heart, then learn while memorizing each prayer reading.

If you are afraid to leave the prayer because you have not memorized the reading, then please read the prayer reading book but only temporarily, until you are able to memorize it properly, not for a long time. Because you are still burdened with studying and memorizing each prayer reading so that later you can pray more relaxed and solemn without having to read the procedure book and prayer readings when praying.

Or you can just do the pillars of prayer, without reading other readings for a while as long as you learn to memorize prayer readings.

Here are the pillars of prayer that should not be abandoned:

1. Intentions
2. Takbiratul ihram
3. Stand up for those who can afford it
4. Read Al-Fatihah
5. Bowing is accompanied by thuma'ninah
6. I'tidal is accompanied by thuma'ninah
7. Prostration accompanied by thuma'ninah
8. Sitting between 2 prostrations accompanied by thuma'ninah
9. Sit tahiyat end
10. Read the final tahiyat reading
11. Reading the blessings of the Prophet
12. The first greeting
13. Order.

Another option, you can also pray in congregation as a congregation to make it easier to pray.

May Allah make it easy for you to learn to memorize and practice reading prayers well, amen.

Wallahu a'lam,

Hope it works!

Peace, mercy and blessings of God
